Biography
Ernest Albert Henry, known as Ernie Henry, was an American jazz saxophonist born on September 3, 1926, in Brooklyn, New York. He started playing piano at age eight, later switching to alto saxophone. In 1947, after his military service, Henry was discovered by pianist Tadd Dameron and joined his group, performing at the Famous Door club. This led to recordings for Savoy and Blue Note labels. From 1948 to 1949, he played with Dizzy Gillespie's orchestra. In 1956, Henry returned to the scene, collaborating with Thelonious Monk on Brilliant Corners and with Charles Mingus. He rejoined Gillespieâs new orchestra for tours and recorded three albums for Riverside Records between 1956 and 1957. Henry died on December 29, 1957. Notable posthumous releases include Last Chorus, Introducing Ernie Henry, and Seven Standards and a Blues.
