Elisabeth Erna Berger was a German lyric coloratura soprano born on October 19, 1900, in Dresden. Following childhood years in South America, she returned to Germany to study with Melitta Hirzel. She performed her debut at the Semperoper in 1926 in the opera Hanneles Himmelfahrt. Berger served as a member of the Berlin State Opera between 1934 and 1946 and was included on the Gottbegnadeten-Liste. Her roles included the Queen of the Night in Die Zauberflöte, Violetta in La traviata, and Konstanze in Die Entführung aus dem Serail. She performed her debut at the Metropolitan Opera in 1949 and recorded Rigoletto in 1950. After her final stage performance as Zerlina in Don Giovanni in 1954, she became a professor in Hamburg in 1959. She gave her final recital in 1968. Berger died on June 14, 1990. Posthumous releases included the album Berger Singt Pfitzner, Strauss, Wolf-Lieder in 2004.
