Biography
Elisabeth Schumann, born on June 13, 1888 in Merseburg, Germany, was a lyric soprano known for her roles in opera, operetta, oratorio, and lieder. She trained in Berlin and Dresden before debuting at the Hamburg State Opera in 1909. Schumann's career initially focused on lighter soubrette roles but expanded into lyrical, coloratura, and dramatic parts. From 1919 to 1938, she was a prominent figure at the Vienna State Opera, where her most famous role was Sophie in Richard Strauss's Der Rosenkavalier. She also excelled in Mozart roles such as Pamina in The Magic Flute and Susanna in Le nozze di Figaro. In 1938, Elisabeth Schumann emigrated to New York City, continuing to teach and perform until her death on April 23, 1952. Notable posthumous releases include Elisabeth Schumann: Lieder Recordings 1930-1938 (2006) and The Art Of Elisabeth Schumann (2010).
