Eichenschild, a German medieval rock band formed in 1998, originated from Bischofswerda. The group was inspired by J.R.R. Tolkien's character Thorin Eichenschild from The Hobbit. Initially comprising guitar, vocals, drums, and bass, the band later incorporated traditional instruments such as bagpipes, flutes, shawms, and hurdy-gurdies. Their debut album, Mondscheinlegenden, was released in 2000 as an independent production. Following a hiatus due to members pursuing their studies, Eichenschild returned with Auf Gedeih und Verderb in 2001. The band's fourth album, Das Ende vom Lied, was released in 2005. After a concert in Neukirch on December 22, 2007, Eichenschild announced a creative break. They resumed performances in April 2011 and continued to play select shows through 2012.
