Biography
Edward McGuire was born in 1948 in Possilpark, Glasgow. He is a Scottish composer who studied composition at the Royal Academy of Music under James Iliff from 1966 to 1970 and later with Ingvar Lidholm in Stockholm in 1971. McGuire's breakthrough came with his solo violin piece "Rant", which won a competition for the 1978 Carl Flesch International Violin Competition. His opera The Loving of Etain premiered in 1990, and Cullercoats Tommy followed in 1993. McGuire received notable awards, including the British Composers' Award in 2003 and a Creative Scotland Award in 2004. His ballet Peter Pan, staged by Scottish Ballet and Hong Kong Ballet over 120 times, is one of his most frequently performed works. Notable recordings include Music for Flute, Guitar and Piano (2006) with Nancy Ruffer, Abigail James, and Dominic Saunders, and Entangled Fortunes (2015) with Red Note Ensemble, both released on Delphian Records.
