Biography

Edgar Gonzalon, born on November 30, 1957, in Ibarra, Imbabura, Ecuador, has become a celebrated figure in the world of salsa music. Growing up as the fifth of eight siblings, he inherited his passion for music from his parents and began performing at just 10 years old, captivating audiences at school and local venues such as the Coliseo de Ibarra. His breakthrough came at age 18 during military service in Tulcán, where he won a festival in Colombia with his performance of Bomba music, marking the beginning of his songwriting career. Over the years, Edgar Gonzalon's talent has led him to perform alongside legendary artists like Julio Jaramillo, Willie Colón, Joe Arroyo, and Aventura. In 1989, he founded Grupo Poder Negro, producing hits like "Carmen" and "El Bombero." Known for his iconic track "El Negrito de la Salsa," he has composed over 120 songs, many of which are recorded and performed internationally. His 2008 album Pa’ Bailar el Son, recorded in Colombia with Codiscos, solidified his reputation in Latin music.
