Biography

Eddie South learned to play the violin at the age of 10 and began his studies at the Chicago School of Music (1922). He set his sights on a career as a classical musician, but at the time it was unthinkable for a black musician to make it in this milieu, so he turned to jazz. In 1924, Jimmy Wade appointed Eddie South musical director of his orchestra: the Syncopaters. South came to Europe, notably Paris in 1928, played at the Moulin-Rouge and the Boeuf sur le Toit, took advantage of his stay in Paris to deepen his knowledge of classical music, continued his trip to Hungary to study Gypsy music (1929) and ended his European tour in England (1930). Back in the U.S., Eddie South settled in Chicago and set up a small band, the Alabamians, with Milt Hinton, making his professional debut, and Everett Barksdale. He returned to France for the 1937 Paris World's Fair. While there, he recorded for the new Swing label, with Django Reinhardt, Stéphane Grappelli and Michel Warlop. His undying passion for classical music gave him the opportunity, with Charles Delaunay, founder of the Swing label, to record Johann Sebastian Bach's "First Movement of the Concerto in D minor". He returned to the United States (1938), formed small groups and performed in various cities. He played in New York's 52nd Street clubs, then in Los Angeles and Chicago for some twenty years. Illness forced him to withdraw from the jazz scene, but he went on to work for television, radio and MGM. Gifted with an impressive instrumental technique, an innate sense of swing and a very pure sound, Eddie South, a born melodist, added a little gypsy inspiration to these qualities. This violin prodigy is an exceptional musician.
