Biography

Alexander Campbell "Eck" Robertson, born November 20, 1887, in Delaney, Arkansas, was an American fiddle player. He began learning to play the fiddle at age five and later learned banjo and guitar. In 1922, Robertson and Henry Gilliland recorded four fiddle duets for Victor Talking Machine Company, including "Arkansaw Traveler" and "Turkey in the Straw", which are considered among the first commercial recordings of country music performers. His first record, featuring "Sallie Gooden" and "Arkansaw Traveler", was released in September 1922. In 1929, Robertson recorded with his family band, including wife Nettie and children Daphne and Dueron, as well as Texas fiddler J.B. Cranfill. Notable recordings from this period include "Texas Wagoner" and "Great Big Taters". Robertson continued performing extensively at dances, theaters, and festivals throughout. He died on February 15, 1975, in Borger, Texas. His tombstone is engraved "World's Champion Fiddler."
