Biography

Kate Joy Smithson, known professionally as Kate Earl, was born in Anchorage, Alaska, and began her musical journey as a pianist at four, later adding guitar at seventeen while working at her parents’ gas station. After relocating to Los Angeles in 2004, she secured a deal with The Record Collection, and her debut album Fate Is the Hunter was released on 10 May 2005. She adopted the stage name Kate Earl before the release of her self‑titled EP Introducing Kate Earl (22 June 2009) and the full‑length album Kate Earl (18 August 2009), both of which expanded her presence in the pop‑rock and jazz‑pop scenes. In 2012, she signed with Downtown Records and issued the album Stronger (20 November 2012), featuring the single "One Woman Army" (18 September 2012); the track later appeared on the 2013 Goo Goo Dolls and Matchbox Twenty tour set‑lists. A shift toward independent production followed, leading to the 2017 release of Tongue Tied, with its title track nominated as Radio 2's Record of the Week in February 2017. Her 2023 album Rise was issued through Position Music. Throughout her career, Kate Joy Smithson has collaborated with notable Los Angeles musicians such as Brett Dennen and Blake Mills, and her work has been featured on BBC Introducing and in television media, marking her as a consistent contributor to contemporary American pop and jazz‑influenced music.
