Biography

Edward George Power Biggs was a British-born American concert organist and recording artist born on March 29, 1906, in Westcliff-on-Sea. He achieved professional recognition for a musical career characterized by the organ music of pre-Romantic composers and for his leadership in the 20th-century organ revival. Biggs achieved professional recognition for a career that began after he studied at the Royal Academy of Music and moved to the United States in 1930. He achieved professional recognition for serving as an organist at Christ Church in Cambridge and recording for the label RCA Victor and the label Columbia Records for more than three decades. Biggs achieved professional recognition for hosting a weekly radio program on the CBS Radio Network between 1942 and 1958 and collaborating on the installation of a tracker organ at the Busch-Reisinger Museum. His discography included the studio recording Bach: Organ Favorites (1961) and the studio recording E. Power Biggs' Greatest Hits (1969). He achieved professional recognition for the studio recording The Glory of Gabrieli (1968) and receiving a Grammy award for Best Chamber Music Performance for the studio recording The Glory of Gabrieli Vol. II. Biggs died on March 10, 1977.
