Biography

Donald Swann, born on September 30, 1923, in Llanelli, Carmarthenshire, Wales, was a British composer, musician, singer, and entertainer. He attended Westminster School, where he first met Michael Flanders, with whom he later formed a musical partnership. In 1948, they began writing songs together, leading to the revues At the Drop of a Hat (1957) and At the Drop of Another Hat (1964), performed worldwide until 1967. Swann also composed classical music, including settings for C.S. Lewis's Perelandra and J.R.R. Tolkien’s poems from The Lord of the Rings, titled "The Road Goes Ever On" (1968). He continued performing solo concerts throughout the 1980s and 1990s. Swann died on March 23, 1994, at Trinity Hospice in South London.
