Biography

Dinah Lee is a New Zealand singer who was born as Diane Marie Jacobs in Waimate, New Zealand, in 1943. She achieved early professional recognition in 1964 with her debut single "Don't You Know Yockomo?" and is famous for being the “Queen of the Mods” and for her significant chart success in New Zealand and Australia. Lee began her career at age 15 with the ensemble Bobby Davis & the Dazzlers and later performed with the group The Playboys. Her single "Don't You Know Yockomo?" (1964) reached Number 1 in New Zealand and topped the charts in the Australian cities of Brisbane and Melbourne. Her discography includes the hit singles "Reet Petite" (1964) and "Do the Blue Beat" (1964), both of which featured backing by Max Merritt & His Meteors. She appeared regularly on television programs including Sing, Sing, Sing and Bandstand and released her debut studio recording Introducing Dinah Lee in 1964. Notable compilations include The Very Best of Dinah Lee (2001) and 1964-67 (2006).
