Biography

Dick Lee – born Richard Lee Peng Boon on August 24, 1956, In Singapore – is a singer, songwriter, film director, and playwright. He began his career in 1971 in the group Harmony, participating in talent contests. He also fronted Dick & the Gang, which featured his siblings. In 1974, he released his debut solo album, Life Story. His only other release in the 1970s was the 1979 single “Internationaland”, but Dick Lee remained busy behind the scenes, advocating for pop music artists in Asia to incorporate more Asian elements to their sound. His next album, Life in the Lion City (1984) was a great success and is now considered one of Singapore’s most important releases. He released several more albums – including Return to Beauty World (1985), The Songs From Long Ago (1986), and Connections (1987) – before he released his commercially successful and critically acclaimed album The Mad Chinaman (1989). Dick Lee moved to Japan in 1990 and continued to release albums such as Asia Major (1990), Orientalism (1991) and the extremely successful Transit Lounge (1999). He continued to release solo albums while also serving as an A&R rep for Sony Music Asia (1998-2000) and writing songs for several motion pictures as well as providing songs to up and coming Asian talents. His writing talents also include stage musicals such as Beauty World (1988), Sing to the Dawn (1996), Nagraland (1992) and more. In 2004, he published his autobiography and became a judge on the first three seasons of Singapore Idol (2004-2009). Dick Lee remained very active, releasing more solo albums, penning more music for films and musicals while also performing several tours and high-profile live shows. In 2014, he celebrated his 40th anniversary as a recording artist with a live extravaganza and a special compilation entitled 40 Anniversary Collection, which included hits such as “Fried Rice Paradise”, “The Mad Chinaman”, “Mustaphe”, “Wo Wo Ni Ni”, and many more. In 2017, he made his debut as a film director with the autobiographical musical Wonder Boy.
