Biography

Device was an American pop-rock trio from the mid-1980s, formed by keyboardist and bassist Holly Knight. The group also included frontman Paul Engemann and guitarist Gene Black. Before forming Device, Knight had already established herself as a songwriter, penning hits for artists like Pat Benatar and Tina Turner. In 1985, Knight and Black collaborated with Turner on "One of the Living" from the soundtrack to Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome. The following year, Device released their debut album, 22B3, which featured the Top 40 single "Hanging on a Heart Attack", peaking at number 35 on the Billboard Hot 100. The band's second single, "Who Says", reached number 79. Both songs were promoted with music videos that received heavy rotation on MTV. 22B3 peaked at number 73 on the Billboard 200 chart. Despite their initial success, Device disbanded in 1986. After the breakup, Knight released a self-titled solo album in 1988, while Engemann joined Animotion and Black continued session work with various artists. 22B3 was re-released on CD by Renaissance Records in 1996 and again in 2007.
