Biography

The Mandopop artist known as Deserts Chang was born Chiao An-p'u on May 30, 1981 in Taiwan. The daughter of a government official, she began writing original material at the age of 13 and quickly accumulated over a hundred songs. Her first brush with fame arrived when she was a member of the band Mango Runs, which won the Indie Music Award at the Hohaiyan Rock Festival in Taipei County in 2003 and was featured on the 2004 documentary Ocean Fever. This helped Deserts Chang land a contract with Sony BMG, who issued her studio debut My Life Will… in 2006. The album contained many songs she had written as a teenager, including the fan favorite “Bao Bei (In the Night).” It also earned her four nominations at the 18th Golden Melody Awards, something unprecedented for an independent artist. Deserts Chang followed this success with the EPs Baby in Life (2007) and Love, New Year (2008), as well as the full-lengths Dear... I Don't Know Yet (2008) and The City (2009). In 2012, she won her first Golden Melody Award thanks to the lyrics of the song “Rose-colored,” a socially poignant track included on her fourth studio album Games We Play.
