Biography
The W was born on May 29, 1968 in Alsfeld. His real name is Stephan Weidner. He is a German rock musician, songwriter and producer and is regarded as a formative figure in German-language hard rock and metal. Stephan Weidner began his musical activities in the early 1980s. In 1980, he founded the band Böhse Onkelz in Frankfurt am Main together with Kevin Russell, Peter "Pe" Schorowsky and Mario "Gonzo" Götze. The group developed into one of the most successful rock bands in Germany and shaped German hard rock, metal and punk rock for decades. Stephan Weidner acts as bassist, guitarist, songwriter and creative head and performs internationally with the band, including at large indoor and open-air concerts. After the Böhsen Onkelz left the stage, Stephan Weidner launched his solo project Der W in 2008. The project stands for German-language hard rock and rock with autobiographical and social lyrics. In 2008, the debut album Schneller, höher, Weidner is released and reaches number 4 in the German album charts. This is followed in 2009 by Autonomie! which reaches number 3. 2011 sees the release of Der W Verehrt und angespien, also a top 5 success. 2016 sees the release of IV, which reaches number 4 in the German charts. V follows in 2022, reaching number 9. At the end of November 2025, Der W released the live album Akustik Tour - Live im Admiralspalast. The album climbs to number 2 in Germany.
