Denis Wick was a British orchestral trombonist born on June 1, 1931 in Braintree, Essex. He taught himself to play the trombone at age 10 and joined the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra in 1950. Wick moved to the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra in 1952 and premiered Gordon Jacob's trombone concerto there in 1955. He became principal trombone of the London Symphony Orchestra from 1957 to 1988, contributing notably to recordings such as John Williams' arrangement for Star Wars and Mahlerâs Third Symphony. Denis Wick also taught at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama and was a respected brass teacher and designer of mutes and mouthpieces through Denis Wick Products Ltd. He received several honors from the International Trombone Association, including the ITA Award in 1989. Denis Wick passed away on February 12, 2025 at the age of 93.
