Biography

Defunkt, an American jazz fusion band, was founded in 1978 by Joseph Bowie in New York City. Defunkt became known for blending funk, jazz, rock, and punk elements. Their debut album Defunkt was released in 1980, followed by Thermonuclear Sweat in 1982. In 1986, Bowie reassembled Defunkt with new members and released In America in 1988. The group continued releasing albums throughout the 1990s, including Crisis (1992) and Cum Funky (1993). They performed alongside notable artists such as James Brown, David Byrne, and Prince. Defunkt's unique sound, characterized by complex funk jazz basslines and aggressive guitar tones, influenced other artists like the Red Hot Chili Peppers.
