Biography

Dennis Bouman, known professionally as Def Rhymz, was a Surinamese-Dutch rapper born on May 3, 1970 in Paramaribo, Suriname. He became the Netherlands rap champion in 1986 at sixteen years old and performed under the names Def Rijmen and Def Rhymz, forming the rap duo Supersonic Cru with DJ Git Hyper. His breakthrough single “Doekoe” (Sranantongo for money) was released in 1999 and became a number one hit in the Netherlands. Around that time, Def Rhymz collaborated with the Rotterdam-based group Postmen on a cover of Doe Maar’s “De Bom”. His album De Goeiste (later reissued as De Allergoeiste) featured hits including “Schudden”. His music includes tracks such as “Puf” and “Toerkse brief voer ministr”. He also collaborated with DJ Kicken on the single “Sneakers” in 2008. Def Rhymz opened the restaurant Def de Chef in Arnhem. His health declined in later years due to heart complications, and he died of heart failure on March 24, 2024 at the age of 53.
