Biography

Composer, musician, and conductor Debbie Wiseman – born in London, England on May 10, 1963 – is best known for her award-winning work in both television and cinema. Her musical journey began when, after attending the Henrietta Barnett School, she attended the Trinity College of Music (Greenwich) before studying piano and composition at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London. Her training led to a career as a composer of music for film and television, and she rose to prominence in 1994 with her work on the soundtrack for the film Tom & Viv. She received two Academy Award nominations for that film, which led to her working on more soundtracks including Haunted (1995), Wilde (1997), Absolute Truth (1998), and Lighthouse (2000). Her soundtrack for 2004’s Arsène Lupin earned Debbie Wiseman a Movie Music UK Award. Many of her soundtracks have been honored with awards including the BAFTA-winning Warriors (2000) and Feather Boy (2004) and the Emmy-winning Lost Christmas (2011). Other nominated works include the scores for TV series such as Michael Palin’s New Europe (2008), A Poet in New York (2013), The Whale (2013), Dickensian (2015), Wolf Hall (2015), and Shakespeare & Hathaway: Private Investigators (2018). Outside of her soundtrack work, Debbie Wiseman also released her own albums including Orchestral Pictures (1992), Period Drama (2009), Piano Stories (2011), The Musical Zodiac (2016), Debbie Wiseman: Live at the Barbican (2017), the number 1 charting The Mythos Suite with Stephen Fry (2020), and Signature – Live in Concert (2023). Debbie Wiseman is responsible for composing works for several royal family celebrations which were including on The Music of Kings & Queens (2021), which featured narration by Helen Mirren and Damian Lewis. She also composed music for the Platinum Jubilee Celebration in 2022 and the choral piece “Alleluia” for Charles III’s coronation in 2023. Alongside her many honors, awards, and nominations, Debbie Wiseman was appointed as a Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) in 2004, and then earned a promotion to Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) in 2018. In 2025, she recorded some of her soundtrack themes at the piano for the album Ten.
