Maydie Galvin Myles, known professionally as Debbie Taylor, was born on June 23, 1947, in Norfolk, Virginia. She began her musical journey singing gospel in her father's church and later toured nationally with a jazz trio led by her high school music teacher, Reginald Walker. In the late 1960s, she adopted the stage name Debbie Taylor to perform R&B music in local clubs. Her first recordings were produced at Royal Studio in Memphis, Tennessee, including "Check Yourself", which reached Number 37 on the R&B chart in 1968. Taylor's career saw significant milestones with her hit single "Never Gonna Let Him Know", released in 1969, which peaked at Number 18 on the national R&B chart and Number 86 on the pop chart. She recorded several albums, including Comin' Down On You (1972) and notable singles such as "I Donât Wanna Leave You" (1975), which reached Number 32 on the R&B chart and Number 100 on the pop chart. Despite commercial challenges, Taylor's work gained popularity in later years, particularly with the Northern soul scene in the UK. After retiring from music for several years, she re-emerged as Maydie Myles in the early 2010s, releasing The Ones I Love (2011) and performing live shows, including a sell-out performance in the UK in November 2013.
