Biography

David Helpling is an American ambient and electronic guitarist, keyboardist, and film composer from Chula Vista, California, born on March 29, 1969. Helpling launched his solo career with the album Between Green and Blue (1996), which was a finalist for the 1997 INDIE Album-of-the-Year award, followed by Sleeping on the Edge of the World (1999). He operates the production company DHM Music Design. In 2003, Helpling composed the score for the film Trade Offs, incorporating Indian musical elements and vocalist Nidhi Bhatmuley. He collaborated with Jon Jenkins on a trilogy of albums: Treasure (2007), The Crossing (2010), and Found (2013), the latter winning the 2013 ZMR Music Award for Best Electronic Album. His solo discography includes A Sea Without Memory (2017), Rune (2019), and IN (2022). In 2024, he formed Dark Sky Alliance, releasing the album Interdwell. In 2025, his collaboration with Eric Taylor, The Precious Dark, reached Number 1 on college radio charts.
