Biography
Danny Williams, born Daniel Williams on 7 January 1942 in Port Elizabeth, Eastern Cape, South Africa, was a traditional pop singer who spent most of his career in the United Kingdom. At the age of 14, his career began after winning a talent contest and joining the touring show Golden City Dixies. In 1959, while performing in London with this group, he caught the attention of EMI's Norman Newell, which led to a recording contract. His early singles included "Tall a Tree" and "So High, So Low", but it was his cover of "Moon River" in 1961 that propelled him to fame, reaching number one on the UK charts. This success led to roles in films such as Play It Cool (1962) and It's All Happening (1963), as well as dates supporting Helen Shapiro alongside the Beatles. His other notable hits include "The Wonderful World of the Young" (1962) and "White on White" (1964), which reached number nine on the US Pop chart. Throughout his career, he released several albums, including Danny Williams (1961), With You in Mind (1964), and Anytime Anyplace Anywhere (1977). Despite experiencing a mental health crisis in 1968 and subsequent bankruptcy, he resumed his career in the early 1970s. He continued to perform and record until his death from lung cancer on 6 December 2005. Posthumously, compilations of his work, including "Moon River", have been issued.
