Biography

Cyril James "Cy" Touff was born on March 4, 1927 in Chicago, Illinois. He started his career playing piano, C-melody saxophone, xylophone, and later trumpet. From 1944 to 1946, he served in the US Army bands playing trombone with Conte Candoli and Red Mitchell. After returning to Chicago, Touff studied under Lennie Tristano and worked with various musicians including Boyd Raeburn and the New York City Opera Company. In the late 1940s, he transitioned to bass trumpet. He played with Nat Pierce/Dick Collins and Woody Herman from 1953 to 1956. Touff contributed to recordings such as the 1955 album Cy Touff - His Octet & Quintet. He collaborated with musicians like Clifford Jordan and Von Freeman, working as a freelancer in Chicago until his death in Evanston, Illinois, on January 24, 2003.
