Biography
Charlie Shoemake, born Charles Edward Shoemake on 27 July 1937 in Houston, Texas, is an American vibraphonist who began piano lessons at six and studied at Southern Methodist University. He later moved to Losâ¯Angeles, where he took private lessons with Jimmy Rowles and recorded with Charles Lloyd, Art Pepper, and the Lighthouse All Stars. In the mid-1960s, he later switched to vibraphone under Victor Feldman's influence. From 1966 to 1973, he was a member of George Shearingâs quintet, gaining international attention. His first solo album, Sunstroke (1980), was followed by Blue Shoe (1980), followed by albums like Slowly (1984), Collaboration (1985), Satin Nights (1987), and Vibes Master - Trios & Quartets (2004). Shoemake collaborated with Lalo Schifrin, Quincy Jones, Frank Sinatra, Johnny Mandel, and Nelson Riddle and established his own music school in the midâ1970s.
