Biography

Confederate Railroad are a country rock band from the deep South who have enjoyed more than 20 hit singles in the Country Charts during their 30-year career. One of the founding members was lead singer Danny Shirley who, prior to forming the band, had previously had five singles in the charts as a solo artist. The group were formed in Atlanta in 1987 and after a few years backing so-called outlaw country artists such as David Allan Coe and Johnny Paycheck they signed a deal with Atlantic Records. Their first album with Atlantic produced six hit singles and went double platinum in the US and included the Gibson and Louvin song 'Queen of Memphis' which reached number two, and the novelty hit 'Trashy Women'. Their second album was also certified platinum but after these initial hits the band's later albums failed to achieve the same levels of success. After releasing their sixth album in 1999 the band took a break from recording and didn't go back to the studio until 2007 when they recorded a compilation of cover versions titled 'Cheap Thrills'. Despite not having recent chart success the band remain a popular act on the country circuit and in 2010 released their first live album 'Confederate Railroad Live: Back to the Barrooms'.
