Biography

Clive Stevens (1948–2019) was a British jazz and fusion musician born in Bristol on February 18, 1948. A multi-instrumentalist, Stevens played saxophone, flute, keyboard, and percussion. Following lessons with Eddie Jackman and Ronnie Ross, he joined Manfred Mann's Chapter III in 1970. Stevens studied composition and improvisation at the Berklee College of Music, San Francisco Conservatory of Music, Guildhall School of Music, and the US Naval Academy of Music, receiving private instruction from Lee Konitz. He conducted tours in Europe, India, the United States, the Caribbean, and South America. Stevens collaborated with musicians including John Abercrombie, Billy Cobham, Steve Hackett, Gilberto Gil, Naná Vasconcelos, and Ralph Towner. His discography includes the albums Atmospheres (1972), Voyage to Uranus (1974), Semijase (1983), New York Street Walk (1985), Invisible Intelligence (2006), and The Greatest Hits of Mr. X (2008). Stevens died on January 24, 2019.
