Christiane Stefanski was born in Saint-Nicolas, Belgium, in 1949, into a family of Polish origin. In her early years, she joined several folk music groups. From the 70s onwards, she became politically involved and developed a more in-depth reflection. Christiane Stefanski took part in a number of collective albums with explicit titles: Autour des usines (1975), Contr'Eurovision (1979) and Anti-fascisme et résistance (1980). Despite her already extensive artistic activity, the singer really came into her own in the 80s. In 1980, she released her eponymous debut album, featuring jazz-tinged songs and compositions by Anne Sylvestre, Annkrist, Gilles Servat and Michel Gilbert. Then, in 1982, Le Pays Petit was released, with songs by Claude Semal, Henri Goldman and Irène Kaufer. The songs were a mild success, and won Stefanski the prize for best song and the press award at the Spa Festival that same year. These first two albums were followed by a third, eponymous album of more relative scope, and then by several years of artistic silence. Nevertheless, she continued to tour, first at the Moscow Youth Festival in 1985, then in France and Switzerland at the end of the decade. In 1994, she released her fourth collection of songs, Carnet de Doutes, featuring strings and jazz instrumentation, as well as covers, such as Pierre Perret's "Lily ". Christiane Stefanski's recording output subsequently became rarer, although she did take part in several shows and performed in concert, as in 2012 at the Centre Wallonie-Bruxelles in Paris.
