Biography

With his group Nação Zumbi, Chico Science is one of the main driving forces behind the mango beat movement that took hold of Recife (Pernambuco) around 1991. Blending Nordeste and carnival rhythms with funk, rap and rock, mango beat, along with samba reggae, was the starting point for Brazilian music at the end of the twentieth century. Chico Science got off to a flying start withDa Lama ao Caos in 1994. Such was the impact that Chico Science was thrown into the international limelight, performing with Gilberto Gil in New York in 1995. Afrociberdelia in 1996 was unfortunately the second and last album by Chico Science, who died in a car accident on February 2, 1997. The posthumous double album CSNZ in 1998 contains remixes and live recordings. Despite his slim physique, Chico Science's legacy is considerable and will irradiate Brazilian music for a long time to come.
