Chang Xiangyu, born Zhang Miaoling on September 15, 1923, in Gong County, Henan, China, was a notable singer specializing in Chinese opera. Her father taught her to sing and perform Yue opera from a young age. At 13, she performed in The Story of the Western Wing, marking her breakthrough into the world of opera. In 1948, Chang Xiangyu established the Xiang Yu Opera Company in Xi'an. During the Korean War, she toured China performing as Hua Mulan to raise funds for military aircraft. Her portrayal of Mulan was also featured in a 1956 film. She served multiple terms as a deputy to the National People's Congress from 1954 to 1975 and again from 1978 to 1993. In 1995, she was awarded the National Advanced Worker title for her contributions. Chang Xiangyu passed away on June 1, 2004.
