Biography

Carol Lynn Townes, born in Warrenton, North Carolina, is an American soul singer. She began her musical journey at age three, singing gospel with her family. In the early 1970s, she moved to New York and joined Fifth Avenue, a male soul group featuring prominent jingle singers. With Townes as lead vocalist, they released the single "Wheeler Dealer" on Buddha Records in 1976, followed by an album on RCA Records. Townes' breakthrough came nearly a decade later when she signed with Polydor as a solo artist and recorded a cover of Alton McClain & Destiny's "99½" for the Breakin' soundtrack. The song became a top 10 dance club hit, reaching Number 22 on the US Billboard R&B chart and Number 77 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1984. She then recorded "Believe in the Beat" for the film Breakin' 2: Electric Boogaloo, which reached Number 56 in the UK and Number 65 in Australia. These successes led to her solo albums, Satisfaction Guaranteed (1985) and Try Me Out (1988). Townes also released the single "What I Wouldn't Do" on Easy Street in 1989 and a dance version of The Grass Roots' hit "Midnight Confessions" on Life Line in 1993.
