Biography

The Cantamus Girls Choir, founded in 1968 in Mansfield, Nottinghamshire, England, is a choral ensemble comprising approximately forty girls aged thirteen to nineteen, with a junior section for younger members. The choir was established by Pamela Thompson (Director), Geoffrey Thompson (Treasurer), Sheila Haslam (Secretary), and Ivan Haslam (Tickets/CD), and developed a reputation for technical precision and stylistic versatility across a wide choral repertoire. The group gained wider public attention with the release of the single "Everybody’s Gotta Learn Sometime" in 2005, which entered the UK Singles Chart and coincided with the EMI album Cantamus, released the same year. Subsequent releases include the album Aurora (2012), further reinforcing the choir’s presence in the contemporary choral recording landscape. The ensemble has earned numerous accolades, notably winning the Llangollen International Musical Eisteddfod Choir of the World in 1997, Olympic Champion titles at the World Choir Games in 2004 and 2006, and the Grand Prix at the Riva del Garda Festival in 1996; its appearance at the 2006 World Choir Olympics in Xiamen resulted in two gold medals and the highest competition score of 89.13. The choir continues to perform internationally, contributing to the cultural landscape of English choral music.
