Biography

Brijean is the collaborative project of percussionist and singer/songwriter Brijean Murphy and multi-instrumentalist/producer Doug Stuart. Raised around musicians, Murphy, who lends her name to the duo, has a background in Latin and jazz music, having been immersed in the music industry from a young age, thanks to her father, who was a percussionist and engineer. In 2016, she was invited to join singer/songwriter Toro y Moi as a percussionist for his live sets, developing a reputation as an accomplished DJ, session, and live player in Oakland’s diverse music scene. Stuart, on the other hand, developed a passion for jazz as a teenager, attending clubs and festivals, and later studied at the University of Michigan, where he became interested in production. In 2018, Stuart began recording songs with Murphy, adding layers of bass, keys, and other instruments, which resulted in a unique blend of dreamy, groovy, and tropical sounds, often described as a mix of indie pop, disco, and jazz. Their debut album, Walkie Talkie, was released in 2019 on Native Cat Recordings, followed by Feelings in 2021 on Ghostly International and the nine-track EP Angelo in 2022. In 2024, they collaborated with Toro y Moi on the single "Genius of Love," followed by their psych-pop inspired third album, Macro, released in July.
