Bittereinder, a South African rap band from Pretoria, was formed in 2009 by Jaco van der Merwe, Peach van Pletzen, and Louis Minnaar. The group's name originates from the Second Boer War, symbolizing resilience and perseverance. Their debut album, 'n Ware Verhaal, was released in 2010. In 2013, they released "Kwaad Naas", a song addressing tensions between English and Afrikaans whites in South Africa. Bittereinder gained recognition through performances at major festivals such as Oppikoppi and collaborations with artists like David Kramer and Tumi Molekane. They have also toured internationally, including shows in the Netherlands and Mozambique. In 2015, Jaco van der Merwe co-founded Wêreld Records. Their fifth album, Volksvreemde Vertalings, released on September 9, 2022, showcased a more introspective style. Throughout their career, Bittereinder was known for their high-energy performances and thought-provoking lyrics that often blended Afrikaans and English.
