Biography

Beverly Kenney was an American jazz singer born on January 29, 1932, in Harrison, New Jersey. She worked as a singer of telegrams for Western Union and performed in Miami Beach before relocating to New York. In 1955, Kenney performed with the Dorsey Brothers Orchestra and recorded a demo with Tony Tamburello. She appeared at a jazz benefit at Carnegie Hall in October 1955 alongside Miles Davis and Art Blakey. Kenney recorded three albums for Royal Roost and three for Decca, including Sings for Johnny Smith (1956) and Born to Be Blue (1959). She performed the song “I Hate Rock 'n' Roll” on The Steve Allen Show in 1958. Kenney died by suicide on April 12, 1960. Her recordings, including the archival release Snuggled on Your Shoulder (2006), were subsequently reissued on CD in Japan.
