Bell & James are an American soul group from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Formed in 1978, the duo consisted of LeRoy Bell and Casey James, who both played multiple instruments including drums, guitar, bass, and keyboards. Prior to forming Bell & James, both members had experience playing with Special Blend and writing songs together. Their breakthrough came when they were signed to Gamble & Huff as songwriters for Philadelphia International Records by Thom Bell, LeRoy's uncle. Bell & James released their debut album Only Make Believe in 1979, followed by the self-titled album Bell & James that same year. Their third and final album, In Black & White, was released in 1981. Notable singles include "You Never Know What You've Got" (1978), "Ain't We Funkin' Now / Livin' It Up (Friday Night)" (1978), the latter which reached number 7 on the Billboard R&B singles chart and number 15 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1979, selling over one million copies in the U.S. They followed this with "Say It, Say It" in 1989, which peaked at number 59 on the UK Singles Chart.
