Belfegore was a German dark wave band from Düsseldorf, formed in the early 1980s by Michael David Clauss. Before founding Belfegore, Clauss played with punk bands KFC and Nichts. In January 1983, Clauss released his debut album, A Dog Is Born, which received positive reviews in both German and English music press. The band's lineup solidified with Manfred "Charly" Terstappen on drums and Walter Jäger on keyboard and bass. Belfegore gained attention through live performances, including shows supporting The Fall and a notable appearance at the Progetto Germania Festival in Rome. Their second album, Belfegore, was released in September 1984 under Elektra Records, featuring the single "All That I Wanted", which included a music video directed by Zbigniew RybczyÅski. Despite critical acclaim and international tours with Hanoi Rocks and U2, Belfegore disbanded in March 1985 due to Clauss's inability to handle commercial pressure.
