Biography

Banda Original Columbia were an Argentine brass-band ensemble associated with patriotic, ceremonial, and marching repertoire. Their recorded profile is centered on 1978, when they released the album Al Gran Pueblo Argentino Salud, a set built around national symbols and school or military staples such as “Himno Nacional Argentino,” “Himno al Libertador General San Martín,” “Mi Bandera,” “Aurora (Canción a la Bandera),” “San Lorenzo,” and “Marcha de las Malvinas.” That same year they also issued Marcha Oficial del Mundial ’78 - Single, tying the group to the atmosphere of the Argentina-hosted FIFA World Cup. “Marcha de las Malvinas” took on particular weight during the Malvinas/Falklands war period, reaching Number 1 in Argentina in 1982. More than individual performers, Banda Original Columbia are best understood through that compact but durable catalog of ceremonial brass recordings that kept titles like “Marcha de las Malvinas,” “Himno Nacional Argentino,” and “San Lorenzo” in circulation long after their original release.
