Area 11 was formed in Nottingham, England on 8 October 2010 by vocalist Thomas "Sparkles" Clarke, guitarist Alex Parvis, and drummer Leo Taylor, all of whom had met during a jam session; bassist Jonathan Kogan joined in 2011. The group's first song "Euphemia" was inspired by the anime Code Geass, and the band's name references the anime's designation of Japan as Area 11. The band released their debut EP Blackline on 3 September 2011 through Breaking the Boredom, followed by the studio album All the Lights in the Sky on 31 January 2013, which established their blend of heavy guitars and synthesizers. Subsequent releases included the EP Underline on 2 November 2014 and the full-length Modern Synthesis on 1 July 2016 under Smihilism Records, a label that also distributed the single "Heaven-Piercing Giga Drill" in 2013 and "GO!! Fighting Action Power" in 2013. The band's music was commissioned for the Bravoman web-series and the Wonder Momo anime, expanding their reach beyond the UK. Area 11 continued releasing music through 2020, including their third studio album Singlarity on 18 December 2020, before announcing an official hiatus on 10 January 2026, citing lack of passion, members' involvements in other projects, and the fact that they had all moved to different cities, though they did not rule out the possibility of a future reunion.
