Biography

Gavin King, known professionally as Aphrodite, was born on 28 November 1968 in Aberystwyth, Wales, and later relocated to London with his family. After studying computer science, he entered the electronic music scene as a DJ and producer, initially performing under the monikers A Zone and DJ Aphrodite. His early career included membership in the breakbeat hardcore group Urban Shakedown, which achieved a UK Top 40 hit with "Some Justice". Aphrodite established Aphrodite Recordings, a label inspired by a club he ran in 1988, and released his first studio album, Aphrodite, in 1999 on V2 Records, followed by Aftershock on 24 June 2002, also under V2. During this period he produced singles such as "All Over Me" featuring Barrington Levy and "See Thru It" featuring Wildflower, both of which contributed to the growth of drum 'n'bass and jungle music in the United Kingdom. Aphrodite’s work is noted for its influence on the jump‑up sub‑genre and for pioneering techniques that shaped contemporary electronic music production.
