Anthony Phillips (born 23 December 1951 in Chiswick) is an English guitarist, composer, and founding member of Genesis, widely admired for his delicate 12-string guitar style and pastoral approach to progressive rock. Educated at Charterhouse School, he helped shape the early Genesis sound alongside Mike Rutherford and Tony Banks, especially on the album Trespass, before leaving the band in 1970 due to severe stage fright and anxiety. Anthony Phillips later developed a respected solo career centered on atmospheric, melodic, and acoustic-based music that blended progressive rock, folk, and classical influences. His most acclaimed album, The Geese & the Ghost (1977), featuring contributions from former Genesis members, is considered a landmark of pastoral progressive rock. Other important recordings include Wise After the Event (1978), 1984 (1981), and the long-running Private Parts & Pieces series, which showcased his intimate instrumental writing and reflective mood. Unlike many progressive-rock guitarists, Anthony Phillips avoided virtuoso display, favoring texture, melody, and emotional subtlety. His music evokes the English countryside, nostalgia, and quiet introspection, making him one of the most distinctive and influential figures in the gentler, more lyrical side of progressive rock. Other notable solo albums include Sides (1979), Slow Dance (1990), Field Day (2005), and Strings of Light (2019). In 2026, his classical-inspired album Gemini - Pieces for Piano reached number 13 on the UK Classical Albums Chart.
