Biography

Anne Shelton, born Patricia Jacqueline Sibley on November 10, 1923, in Dulwich, South London, is an English vocalist known for her contributions to pop and traditional pop music. At 16, she appeared on the BBC talent radio show Monday Night at Eight and sang "Let the Curtain Come Down", which led to her signing with dance-band leader Bert Ambrose's Ambrose Orchestra. She made her first broadcast with Ambrose in June 1940 and released her debut solo record for Rex Records, featuring "I Can't Love You Any More" backed with "Fools Rush In (Where Angels Fear to Tread)". Shelton’s career gained momentum during World War II as she performed at military bases across Britain, and her radio programme Calling Malta aired from 1942 to 1947. She achieved her first Number 1 hit in the UK with "Lay Down Your Arms" in 1956 and had a Top 10 hit in 1961 with her cover version of "Sailor". Throughout her career, she released numerous albums including The Shelton Sound (1957), Showcase (1961), and the compilation I’ll Be Seeing You (1977). She was appointed OBE in 1990 for her work with the Not Forgotten Association, a charitable organisation for disabled former service personnel from all wars. Anne Shelton passed away on July 31, 1994, in Herstmonceux, Sussex.
