Biography

Anna S. Þorvaldsdóttir, born 11 July 1977 in Iceland, is an Icelandic composer who began as a cellist before turning to composition at the Iceland Academy of the Arts and later at the University of California, San Diego. Her breakthrough came with the orchestral work Dreaming (2008), which earned the 2012 Nordic Council Music Prize and was premiered by the Iceland Symphony Orchestra. She released the album Aequa in 2018, and followed with Ubique (2025). Throughout her career she received commissions from the Berliner Philharmoniker, New York Philharmonic, and BBC Proms, and won the 2021 Ivors Composer Award for Catamorphosis and the 2024 Chanel Next Prize.
