Andrew Stewart, born on December 30, 1933, in Glasgow, Scotland, known as Andy Stewart, is a Scottish singer and entertainer. He began his career as an actor at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama in Glasgow, where he studied until 1954. His breakthrough came with the recording of "A Scottish Soldier", which became a hit internationally, reaching Number 1 in Canada, Australia, and New Zealand, and spending 40 weeks on the UK Singles Chart in 1961. Stewart's career spanned several decades, during which he released numerous albums including Twenty Scottish Favourites (2003), Fire In The Glen (2005), and Forever In Song - All Time Scottish Favourites (2007). He was also known for his comedic impersonations and his role as the compere of the BBC TV variety show The White Heather Club, which aired from 1957 to 1968. Stewart's other notable hits include "Donald Where's Your Troosers?" (1960, reissued in 1989), "Campbeltown Loch" (1960) and"Come In-Come In" (1965). He frequently toured internationally, performing in Canada, the US, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, Rhodesia, Singapore, and Hong Kong. Stewart's health issues began to affect his career in the 1970s, leading to several hospitalizations and surgeries. Despite this, he continued to perform until his retirement in 1989. He passed away on October 11, 1993.
