The duo of brothers Simon Huw Jones and Justin Jones formed the group in 1979 and released their first single "Shantell" / "Wallpaper Dying" in 1983. Their debut album And Also the Trees appeared in 1984, followed by Virus Meadow (1986) and The Millpond Years (1988). The track "Shaletown" gained traction in the UK independent scene. Subsequent releases included Farewell to the Shade (1989), which entered the UK Indie Chart at number 3, Green Is the Sea (1992), Silver Soul (1998), Further from the Truth (2003), (Listen for) The Rag and Bone Man (2007), When the Rains come (2009), Hunter Not the Hunted (2012), Born Into the Waves (2016), The Bone Carver (2022), Mother-of-pearl Moon (2024) and The Devil's Door (2026). The band collaborated with Marc Almond on "Love is Not on Trial" (2014) and toured Europe, Japan and the United States, supporting The Cure and The Joy Division in the 1980s.
