Biography

Known for their unique blend of funk, jazz, hip-hop, and global sounds, ALI is a Japanese band formed in Shibuya, Tokyo, in 2016. The group, an acronym for Alien Liberty International, was inspired by the energy and ideals of unity embodied by boxer Muhammad Ali. ALI gained widespread recognition with their debut single "Wild Side", which served as the opening theme for the anime Beastars in 2019. This marked a turning point for the band, showcasing their cross-genre appeal. Their subsequent single "Lost in Paradise" (2020) featuring rapper AKLO became the ending theme for Jujutsu Kaisen, further cementing their place in the Japanese music scene. In May 2021, ALI faced controversy when their drummer, Kahadio, was arrested for fraud, leading to an indefinite hiatus. After a six-month break, the band returned and continued to produce music and perform live. In October 2024, ALI transitioned into a solo project led by vocalist Leo Imamura after key members Luthfi and César left the group. Notable releases include their debut album Music World in January 2023 and the single "Casanova Posse" in January 2025, which served as the opening theme for Dr. Stone: Science Future.
