Biography

Alfred Poell, born March 18, 1900, in Linz, Austria, was an Austrian opera and lieder singer specializing in baritone. He initially studied medicine at the University of Innsbruck and Vienna, earning his Dr. med. degree before turning to music. Poell debuted professionally in 1929 at the Düsseldorfer Oper and joined the Wiener Staatsoper in 1940. He gained international recognition through performances at venues like the Teatro alla Scala di Milano, Royal Opera House, Pariser Oper, Salzburger Festspiele, and Glyndebourne Festival Opera. Notable roles included parts in Don Giovanni (1950), The Rape of Lucretia (1950), Idomeneo, and Le nozze di Figaro (1952). Poell was also a notable lieder singer, with recordings including works by Johann Sebastian Bach and Richard Strauss. He received the title Kammersänger in 1950 and the Österreichisches Ehrenkreuz für Wissenschaft und Kunst 1. Klasse in 1965. Alfred Poell passed away on January 30, 1968.
