Biography

Alessandra Marc, born Judith Borden in 1957 in Berlin, Germany, is an American dramatic soprano. Born to a German mother and an American father serving in the U.S. Army, Marc spent her childhood traveling globally before settling in the Baltimore area for high school. Her interest in opera began during this period when she started taking voice lessons. She studied at the University of Maryland and privately with Marilyn Cotlow. Marc's professional debut was as Giannetta in L'elisir d'amore with the Washington National Opera in the 1980s. She gained broader recognition at the Wexford Festival in 1987 as Lisabetta in La cena delle beffe. Notable roles include her debuts as Aida at the Metropolitan Opera and San Francisco Opera in 1989, and Turandot at the Royal Opera House in 1994. Her discography includes albums such as American Diva: Arias... (1992) and Richard Strauss's Ein Heldenleben and the final scene from Salome (2006).
