Biography
Ahmed Fakroun was born in 1953 in Benghazi, Libya. Fascinated by music from an early age, he began his apprenticeship on the bass, gradually discovering other instruments such as the harmonica, guitar and piano, as well as traditional string instruments such as the oud, mandola and saz. He remained attentive to various musical currents, both Western and rooted in African music, and absorbed a rich variety of influences that soon led him to define his own style. Moving to England after starting out in Libya with his first band, he met producer Tommy Vance, with whom he made his first studio recordings. Accompanied by other musicians, he began performing all over England. Thanks to singles such as "Wadny " and "Nojoum Al Layl", he became very popular in the Arab world. His discography, opened in 1974 with Awedni, produced by Tommy Vance, would be enriched by many other records, including Nisyan, arranged by Vangelis in 1977, Yumma in 1978, Shibacik in 1979 with Mark Harris, but also Soleil Soleil in 1983 and later You Son and Love Words in 1987, also known by its French title Mots d'Amour. Most of his best-known tracks, such as "Salifni Al Gamar", "Sahra", "Soleil Soleil" and "Love Words", which made him one of the pioneers of modern Arab music, can be found on Compilation in 2010.
