Biography

Albert Lancaster Lloyd, known professionally as A. L. Lloyd, was an English folk singer and collector of folk songs born on February 29, 1908, in Wandsworth, London. At the age of fifteen, he migrated to Australia where he worked on sheep stations in New South Wales from 1924 to 1930, during which time he began documenting folksongs. Upon returning to the UK in 1935, he pursued his interest in folk music, conducting research at the British Museum. He later worked as a singer for the BBC. His collaboration with Ralph Vaughan Williams resulted in the book The Penguin Book of English Folk Songs (1959). He recorded numerous albums, including The Best of A. L. Lloyd (1966) and Leviathan (1967). His performance of the song "Doodle Let Me Go (Yaller Girls)" was featured in the film The Lighthouse (2019). He was a founder-member and artistic director of Topic Records until his death in Greenwich, London, on September 29, 1982.
